KIEV -- A 19-year-old mother gave birth to what appear to be healthy Siamese twins, a hospital in the city of Kirovograd announced Saturday.

The two girls, joined at the chest and stomach, weighed in at a collective 5 kilograms 380 grams. Other than the rare joining, the pair appeared to be in good health, Kirovograd Central Hospital spokesman Albert Kovalsky told Interfax news agency.

Doctors had not yet determined whether the girls shared internal organs.

The mother also was reportedly in good condition following the birth.

Ultrasound scans prior to the birth had warned the mother to expect twins. That the twins were connected physically only became clear during delivery, according to the hospital.

Kovalsky said the twins would almost certainly have to be surgically separated in order to live normal lives. The procedure would be particularly difficult in the Kirovograd because Ukrainian doctors have no experience with the procedure, he said.

The last reported instance of a Siamese twin birth in Ukraine was in the 1970s, DPA reported.
